About DSWD
The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) is the primary government agency responsible for the formulation and implementation of social welfare and development policies, programs, and services in the Philippines. The agency was established on June 1, 1948, and has since been at the forefront of social welfare and development efforts in the country.
DSWD’s main goal is to empower individuals, families, and communities to become self-reliant, resilient, and sustainable. The agency’s mandate is to provide social protection to the most vulnerable sectors of society, including women, children, persons with disabilities, senior citizens, and those living in poverty.
DSWD’s programs and services are wide-ranging, covering areas such as social protection, social welfare, and community development. The agency provides financial assistance to indigent families through its Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps), which is a conditional cash transfer program that aims to improve the health, nutrition, and education of children in poor households. DSWD also provides various social welfare services, including residential care for children in need of special protection, rehabilitation and recovery programs for drug dependents, and services for victims of violence and abuse.
Community development is also a significant area of focus for DSWD, with the agency implementing programs and services that aim to strengthen the capacity of local communities to address their own social welfare and development needs. This includes the Kapit-Bisig Laban sa Kahirapan Comprehensive and Integrated Delivery of Social Services (KALAHI-CIDSS) program, which aims to empower communities to identify their own development needs and implement solutions through a participatory approach.
DSWD also works closely with other government agencies, non-government organizations, and international organizations to ensure that its programs and services are comprehensive, effective, and responsive to the needs of the most vulnerable sectors of society. The agency’s work is guided by the principles of transparency, accountability, and people empowerment, and it continues to strive towards achieving a more equitable and inclusive society.
