Vice Pres. Leni nominated for a presidential bid in 2022 Elections by 1Sambayan

The opposition coalition 1Sambayan chose Vice President Leni Robredo as its presidential candidate for the 2022 elections on Thursday, capping off a lengthy selection process that included consultations with various political figures and a member survey.

Along with former Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV, Robredo was one of only two politicians who agreed to participate in 1Sambayan’s selection process.

The vice president has not declared her intention to run for president, but she has been in talks with various politicians in the hopes of forming a single opposition ticket to face President Rodrigo Duterte’s anointed bet.

Even after Domagoso and Sen. Manny Pacquiao declared their intentions to run for president in 2022, Robredo clung to the hope that a united opposition would emerge.

Her spokesperson, Barry Gutierrez, stated on Wednesday that Robredo is open to running for vice president again if that is what it takes to unite non-administration candidates.

In the most recent Pulse Asia poll, conducted from September 6 to 11, Robredo trailed Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio, former Sen. Bongbong Marcos, Domagoso, Pacquiao, and Sen. Grace Poe, with only 8% of Filipinos saying they would vote for her.
