About DILG

The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) is a dynamic government agency in the Philippines that is dedicated to promoting efficient and effective governance at the local level.

With a wide range of functions and responsibilities, DILG plays a crucial role in strengthening local government, promoting peace and order, enhancing disaster preparedness and resilience, advocating for local autonomy and devolution, promoting transparency and accountability, engaging communities and stakeholders, ensuring gender and development mainstreaming, fostering innovation and excellence, and supporting the national development agenda.

DILG is mandated to oversee and supervise local government units (LGUs) in the Philippines, including provinces, cities, municipalities, and barangays. It provides capacity-building programs, technical assistance, and financial support to LGUs to empower them to become more effective and responsive in delivering basic services to their constituents. Through the use of information and communication technology (ICT), DILG promotes the use of innovative solutions to enhance local governance and public service delivery.

As a key enforcer of laws, policies, and regulations related to local governance, public order and safety, and community development, DILG works towards ensuring peace and order in communities. It supervises the Philippine National Police (PNP) and assists LGUs in maintaining public safety, preventing and combating crimes, and responding to emergencies and disasters. DILG also takes the lead in addressing insurgency and terrorism, promoting conflict resolution, and strengthening the rule of law.

Disaster risk reduction and management is a top priority for DILG. It works closely with LGUs in developing and implementing disaster preparedness plans, conducting risk assessments, and establishing early warning systems to enhance the resilience of communities to disasters. DILG also leads in disaster response and recovery efforts, providing timely assistance and support to affected communities.

Engaging communities and stakeholders is a key approach of DILG in local governance. It promotes participatory governance, involving citizens in decision-making, planning, and monitoring of local development initiatives. DILG also fosters partnerships and collaborations with civil society organizations, private sector, and other stakeholders to promote inclusive and sustainable local development.

Finally, DILG aligns its efforts with the national development agenda, contributing to the achievement of the country’s sustainable development goals (SDGs) and other national priorities. It collaborates with various government agencies, LGUs, and stakeholders to ensure that local governance is aligned with national development objectives for the benefit of the Filipino people.
