Established in 2016, the DICT is mandated to promote and ensure the growth of the ICT industry in the Philippines, which is a critical component of the country’s digital transformation efforts. The agency is tasked with developing policies, programs, and initiatives that support the creation of a robust and inclusive digital economy, one that benefits all Filipinos regardless of their location or socioeconomic status.

Some of the key areas of focus for the DICT include broadband infrastructure development, cybersecurity, e-governance, and digital skills training. The agency is responsible for the implementation of the National Broadband Plan, which aims to provide affordable, high-speed internet access to all areas of the country, particularly in underserved and unserved areas.

It works closely with other government agencies, the private sector, and international partners to develop and implement policies and programs that enhance the country’s cybersecurity posture and protect critical information infrastructure.

In addition, the DICT is responsible for promoting e-governance in the Philippines, which involves the use of ICT to improve public service delivery and promote transparency and accountability in government. The agency is working to implement a range of initiatives, such as the development of a national identification system and the establishment of a unified government portal, that will streamline government services and make them more accessible to citizens.

Finally, the DICT is committed to promoting digital skills training and development in the Philippines. It recognizes the importance of equipping Filipinos with the skills they need to thrive in an increasingly digital world and is working to implement a range of programs and initiatives that will help bridge the digital skills gap in the country.

In summary, the Department of Information and Communications Technology is a critical agency of the Philippine government tasked with promoting the growth and development of the country’s ICT sector.
