Department of Science and Technology

The National Science Development Board (NSDB) was established on June 13, 1958, during the presidency of Carlos P. Garcia, following the recommendations of Dr. Frank Co Tui, who conducted a survey on the state of science and technology in the country.

Undergoing a significant transformation, it was reorganized into the National Science and Technology Authority (NSTA) on March 17, 1981, endowed with broader policy-making and program-implementing functions, marking a pivotal moment in its role in shaping the nation’s scientific landscape.

In a significant development during the administration of President Corazon Aquino on January 30, 1987, the NSTA was elevated to cabinet-level status through the signing of Executive Order No. 128, concurrently being renamed as the Department of Science and Technology.

This transformative shift underscored the government’s recognition of the vital role of science and technology in national development, solidifying the position as a key player in shaping policies and initiatives in these crucial domains.
