What is PSA? A Comprehensive Introduction to the Philippine Statistics Authority

Updated:

What is PSA

The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) is the central statistical authority for the Philippine government

PSAmeticulously collects, compiles, analyzes, and publishes statistical information on various aspects of Filipino life, including economic, social, demographic, and political affairs.

Aligned with the objectives of R.A. 10625, R.A. 11055, and R.A. 11315, the PSA plays a pivotal role in planning, developing, and enforcing policies that govern official statistics, civil registration services, and an inclusive identification system.

In this article, we delve into the core functions and responsibilities of the Philippine Statistics Authority.

History & Founding

The Philippine Statistics Authority has a rich history marked by several milestones:

  • On August 19, 1940, the agency was established following the approval of Commonwealth Act 591. It was initially known as the Bureau of the Census and Statistics (BCS).
  • In 1974, Executive Order 121 led to the renaming of the agency as the National Statistics Office.
  • Recognizing the need to enhance the efficiency of the statistical system and improve the timeliness and accuracy of statistics for planning and decision-making, the Philippine Statistical System (PSS) was restructured on January 30, 1987. The issuance of Executive Order 121 provided the basis for the structure of the decentralized PSS.
  • On September 12, 2013, the Philippine Statistics Authority was officially established pursuant to Republic Act 10625, also known as the Philippine Statistical Act of 2013, signed by then President Benigno Aquino III.

Today, the Philippine Statistics Authority stands as the central statistical authority of the Philippine government, fulfilling its mandate to collect, compile, analyze, and publish statistical information on economic, social, demographic, political affairs, and general affairs of the Filipino people.

Mandate, Vision & Mission

The Philippine Statistics Authority is chiefly tasked with carrying out the objectives and provisions laid out in R.A. 10625, R.A. 11055, and R.A. 11315. It takes on the role of planning, developing, prescribing, disseminating, and enforcing policies, rules, and regulations.

The Philippine Statistics Authority holds primary responsibility for conducting national censuses and surveys, managing sectoral statistics, community-based statistics, consolidating selected administrative recording systems, and compiling national accounts.

The PSA aspires to be a solid, responsive, and world-class authority in delivering quality statistics, efficient civil registration, and an inclusive identification system.

The mission of the Philippine Statistics Authority is clear: to deliver relevant and reliable statistics, efficient civil registration services, and an inclusive identification system. This dedication is driven by the goal of fostering equitable development and contributing to an improved quality of life for all.

PSA Board

The Philippine Statistics Authority Board is the driving force behind the agency’s mission to provide accurate and relevant statistical information that supports evidence-based policymaking, economic development, and the well-being of the people of the Philippines.

The collective expertise and commitment of the Board members contribute significantly to the success and impact of the Philippine Statistics Authority.
