About PNRI

The Philippine Nuclear Research Institute (PNRI) is a government-owned and controlled corporation under the Department of Science and Technology of the Republic of the Philippines. The PNRI is the country’s only nuclear research and development agency, and is responsible for the safe and secure utilization of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes. Established in 1974, its main mission is to develop, promote and use nuclear science and technology for the benefit of the Filipino people.

PNRI’s activities range from basic nuclear research, to the design and engineering of nuclear power plants, to the production of radioisotopes for medical and industrial applications. Its research and development programs are focused on building a safe and secure nuclear energy infrastructure, while promoting the peaceful use of nuclear energy.

PNRI has the capability to develop, design, construct, and operate nuclear power plants and other facilities for the production of radioisotopes, as well as to provide the necessary training and manpower for the safe and secure operation of such facilities. It is also mandated to conduct research on nuclear physics, nuclear chemistry, nuclear engineering and related sciences, and to develop and promote the application of nuclear technology in the fields of agriculture, health and medicine, industry, and environment.

Apart from its research and development activities, PNRI also provides regulatory functions such as licensing and enforcement, inspection and surveillance, and radiation safety. It has the capability to monitor and evaluate safety and security of nuclear materials and facilities and to assess the environmental impact of nuclear activities. It also provides consulting services in the area of nuclear power generation and the peaceful use of nuclear energy.

The institute is composed of several divisions, each responsible for different areas of research and development. It has a research and development center, a testing and calibration center, and a nuclear power plant operations center. The institute also has a library, a conference center and a training center.

PNRI is also actively involved in international cooperation, as it participates in various international conferences, seminars, and workshops on nuclear safety and security. It also works closely with international institutions and organizations in the promotion of peaceful uses of nuclear energy.
